Desert Bloodwood

Many are surprised to learn that quite large trees can survive in the harsh desert climate of Australia. This Variable Barked Bloodwood (Eucalyptus dichromophloia) was growing in the most unlikely place near the top a large sand ridge on the Canning Stock Route near Well 41 in the Great Sandy Desert. A probable reason for this is that the dunes act like a giant sponge retaining enough moisture to allow these trees to survive.
