The Painted Desert The spectacular breakaway country of the Painted Desert is part of the Arckaringa Hills, which are located 50km to the south west of Oodnadatta. The Painted Desert is a superb example of the forces of nature weathering and eroding the desert landscape. A hard crust of cemented silica forms on the surface due to the infrequent and low rainfall of this arid region. The silcrete crust protects underlying strata but breaks away on the edges allowing erosion to form mesas or pedestal rocks. The Painted Desert, South Australia. |
