Lake Boomanjin Fraser Island Lake Boomanjin is the largest perched dune lake in the world, covering an area of over 200 hectares. Perched lakes occur in depressions where organic matter accumulates, forming an impermeable base. The depressions are formed by the action of wind blowing a sand mass to cut off a small valley. The moving sand is then stabilised by the growth of vegetation before it entirely fills the valley. The base of the potential lake is still too porous to hold water. It requires a build-up of leaf mulch and other organic detritus to cement together with the sand, to form an impervious seal. Once this seal is in place, the depression begins to hold water, and the lake is formed. Fraser Island, Queensland. |
