Helen Hill Charles Wells named Helen Hill in 1896 during an ill-fated expedition led by his cousin Lawrence Wells. The exploration party had decided to split at Separation Well on Sunday 11 October 1896. Charles Wells and George Jones travelled north-west, passing Helen Hill and a number of features which they also named. They were to rejoin the main party at Joanna Spring to the north east. However, conditions at the time were extreme, and water in short supply. Both parties experienced difficulties in the tough conditions. Wells and Jones failed to meet up with the main party when they arrived in the vicinity of Joanna Spring on 29 October 1896. The main party was in a desperate state and had to depart for Fitzroy River without the others. After a number of searches by various parties, it was not until late May of the following year that Lawrence Wells located the missing men. Their bodies were found about 16 miles south-west of Joanna Spring. Their journal showed that they perished about 21 November 1896, three weeks after the main party had left Joanna Spring.
